Tomás Pablo, the delegate in Spain for the Chilean Agency for Economic Development (CORFO), gave a talk on Chile and its opportunities, to ATANA members
On 22nd October at the Hotel Villava, ATANA organised a seminar for its members, focussed on the situation of the ICT companies in Chile and the business opportunities open to the ICT sector in the various sectors driving economic growth in this country. The seminar was led by Mr Tomás Pablo, the delegate in Spain for CORFO, the body responsible for carrying out the Chilean Government's Innovation and Development policy.
Tomás Pablo commenced his presentation with an insight into the economic development of Chile over the last few years, showing Chile to be an emerging country which is experiencing rapid growth and which aims to be recognised as a developed country by 2018. With this goal in mind, Chile is committed to investing in Knowledge and New Technologies that will help improve the competitiveness of the new developing sectors which are now joining the Mining, Forestry, Agri-food, Aquaculture sectors as the drivers of the Chilean economy over the last few years.
Pablo also underscored the considerable investment made by foreign companies in Chile, with regard to new project development and to mergers and takeovers. Indeed, according to the figures provided by Pablo, more than 95 billion US dollars have been invested by foreign companies in Chile since 1990. As Pablo pointed out, "1,200 of the more than 5,000 foreign companies based in Chile, are Spanish" and he commented that an ever increasing number of companies from Navarre are showing an interest in entering the Chilean market.
The audience, all ICT professionals from Navarre, was then given information on the situation of the Information and Communication Technologies market in Chile, the business opportunities in that market and the figures for growth in IT investments projected for 2011 in Chile. Finally, Tomás Pablo presented the program of aid and incentives offered to attract technology companies from abroad to Chile.
